By coincidence the July issue of BJP arrived on the same day as I took delivery of an iPad. I have been unconvinced of the use of iPads for some time, but have free one from school so have taken the opportunity to download some apps, including the well reviewed BJP app. I started by looking a the Summer iPad edition.
Two things struck me when reading both:
- That there are a lot of very good photographers out there; sometimes I look at the work and read about the time and dedication sent to achieve these results and can only think: "well, I am never going to have time/skill/dedication to do that." Contextually, one has to remember that it is rather like watching top sports stars; just because we cannot all be excellent does not mean we cannot indulge and enjoy what we can do, whilst admiring the feats of those who have more expertise and time;
- Technology has moved on. There is a very detailed article on four new HDSLR models from Canon and Nikon on p82 of the July BJP. I understand very little of the article, but enough to realize that the technology train is getting a little ahead of me. Have had a very good video camera (Sony HCR 900E) for several years to go with my 450D dating from April 2008.But since then HDSLR has taken off and it is interesting to see some of the output therefrom below. Forums seem to suggest 7D is model to go for but to wait till Sept/Oct as they may come down in price following launch of new product by Canon. That seems a plan.
There are certainly well-known photographers now turning their attention to moving images. An example is Josh Cole and his excellent film of break dancing in Rwanda.

I was impressed also with a video for Sans label by Timothy Saccenti, another multi disciplinarian who has made a mark in both still and moving images.
